​Dating to the Art Nouveau period, this piece is an exceptional representation of the era’s obsession with natural beauty and the feminine form. Whilst similar organic motifs are frequently found in gold-fill or silver, finding a high-relief "maiden" portrait in solid 15ct gold is a genuine rarity. In antique districts and specialist London dealers, solid gold examples featuring a functional interior mirror command prices between £2,800 and £3,200.

​The front features a striking portrait of a maiden with flowing hair entwined with wild flowers. This three-dimensional sculpture is achieved through meticulous repoussé and chasing, where the gold has been intricately hammered from the reverse to create fine, light-catching detail in the waves of her hair.

​The Secret Inside

​Whilst it presents externally as a standard pendant locket, a gentle twist reveals its true purpose: a folding mirror compact. In the early 1900s, these pieces were the height of sophisticated nécessaire jewellery, designed for a lady to discreetly check her reflection whilst at the theatre or a gala.

​The Design: High-relief Art Nouveau maiden portrait with foliate details.

​The Interior: A functional, folding interior mirror. In keeping with its age, there is some minor foxing (dullness) around the edges, but the mirror glass remains completely original, intact and practical for use.

​The Metal: Solid 15ct yellow gold. Stamped '15ct' on the reverse, confirming the metal purity and dating the piece to the pre-1932 British standard.
