A VS Old European Cut Solitaire

This is an stunning mid-century, high-clarity Old European Cut diamond in a classic crossover silhouette. The central diamond is housed in a palladium illusion setting— a design technique perfected circa 1930s–1950s to maximise the visual spread and brilliance of the diamond.

The Technical Details

Central Diamond: one Old European Cut Diamond, weighing approximately 0.40cts (verified by a GIA graduate)

Shoulder Detail: 8 single-cut diamonds (approx. 0.04ct total) grain-set into the shoulders.

The Metal: A two-tone mount, tested as a minimum of 17ct yellow gold with palladium

Ring Size: N

Condition: Excellent vintage condition; a robust and perfect everyday ring.

The Rarity: Colour & Clarity

Finding an antique diamond of this era with both bright colour and high clarity is rare.

High Clarity (VS1/VS2): Most diamonds from this period contain significant natural inclusions. A VS (Very Slightly Included) grade means that any internal characteristics are so minute they are difficult for even a professional to spot under 10x magnification. This provides a "clean" diamond that allows light to pass through with zero interference.

Bright Colour (H/I): Old-cut diamonds were often sourced from mines that produced warmer, "creamy" tones. To find a stone in the H/I (Near Colourless) range is a wonderful find. It appears crisp and white against the platinum setting, offering a brightness usually reserved for modern premium stones.

Whilst the report uses the broader trade term "old brilliant," we know this is specifically an Old European Cut because of its technical facets: the characteristic small table, high crown, and the distinct open culet (the flat facet at the very bottom of the stone, visible as a small circle through the table). Unlike modern stones cut by machines, these were hand-cleaved to glow under candlelight, producing a much broader, romantic "flash" of light.

This is a stunning example of mid-20th century jewellery and a wonderful buy as an entry level Old European Cut Diamond for someones collection.
